Privacy Notice
Effective October 30, 2026
In plain language: we collect your email address to send you the B.M. Chandler newsletter and the free story you asked for, and we use what you send us to answer you. We never sell your personal information, we never add you to any other list, and you can unsubscribe or ask us to delete your data at any time.
This notice explains how personal information is handled when you visit https://bmchandlerbooks.com (the "Site"), sign up for the B.M. Chandler newsletter (the "Newsletter"), or contact us. B.M. Chandler is a pen name. The person responsible for your information (the "controller", in European terms) is Brandon Chandler, who publishes books under the pen name B.M. Chandler. In this notice, "we", "us" and "our" mean that controller.
1. What we collect
If you sign up for the Newsletter
- Your email address, plus anything optional you choose to add on the sign-up form (such as your first name).
- Proof of your sign-up: the date and time, the form you used, and your click on the confirmation email (we use double opt-in).
- Email engagement data. Our email platform, Kit, records whether an email was delivered and opened and which links were clicked, using a small tracking image and tracked links. It may also log technical details such as IP address, device or browser type, and the time of the open or click.
If you contact us
- Your email address, what you write, and anything you attach. We won't publish your message or your name without asking you first.
When you visit the Site
- The Site doesn't use cookies, analytics or advertising trackers. It's hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare processes standard technical data, such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver pages and protect the Site from attacks and abuse, and may keep it briefly in security and access logs.
- When the sign-up form is live, it sends your email address straight to Kit. Kit's pages, and any download page used to deliver the free story, may use their own cookies under their own policies.
We don't ask for sensitive information, such as health, financial account or government ID numbers, and we ask you not to send it. We don't sell anything on the Site; book purchases happen on the stores' own sites under their own privacy policies.
2. How we use it, and our legal bases
| What we do | Legal basis (for visitors from the EU, EEA or UK) |
|---|---|
| Send you the free story you asked for, the Newsletter, new-release news and occasional updates from B.M. Chandler | Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing |
| Understand, in aggregate, which emails are useful | Our legitimate interest in improving the Newsletter |
| Keep the Site and our accounts secure and prevent fraud, spam and abuse | Our legitimate interest in security |
| Keep a record of your consent and of unsubscribes, so we can prove the first and honor the second | Legal obligation, and our legitimate interest in honoring your choices |
| Answer your messages | Our legitimate interest in responding to you |
We use your email address only for the B.M. Chandler Newsletter. We don't add it to any other newsletter or list, and we don't combine it with other lists.
We don't make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects.
3. Who processes it for us
We share personal information only with service providers that help us run the Site and the Newsletter, and only as needed for the purposes above:
- Kit: sign-up forms, the email list and email sending. Kit acts as our processor. If Kit shows you recommendations for other newsletters after you sign up, joining any of them is your choice, and those newsletters' own privacy policies apply.
- Cloudflare: Site hosting (Cloudflare Pages) and security.
- Our email service provider: receives and stores messages sent to [email protected].
- AI and productivity tools: we may use AI-assisted tools, run by service providers, to help us draft content and manage our work. We don't sell your data to them or let them use it for their own advertising.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect our rights or the safety of others, or to a successor if this publishing activity is reorganized or transferred, for example to a company formed to run it. A successor would be bound by this notice for the information it receives.
4. What we never do
- We never sell your personal information, and we don't share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- We don't rent, trade or give away our list.
- We don't use advertising pixels or tracking cookies on the Site.
5. How long we keep it
- Subscribers: while you're subscribed. After you unsubscribe, we keep a minimal record (your email address and the date you opted out) so we don't email you again.
- Messages: as long as needed to deal with your request, and then as part of our normal records.
- Site logs: our hosting provider keeps security and access logs for a limited time under its own policies.
6. Your choices and rights
Anyone can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
- correct it;
- delete it (we'll keep only the minimal unsubscribe record described above); or
- stop sending you email (use the unsubscribe link in any email, or write to us). Unsubscribing takes effect promptly, and in any case within 10 business days.
Email [email protected] from the address you used with us. We may need to confirm your identity before acting. We'll respond within 30 days. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.
If you're in the EU, EEA or UK, you also have the right to restrict or object to our processing (including any processing based on our legitimate interests), to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time (this doesn't affect processing before you withdrew it). You can complain to your local data protection authority, though we'd like the chance to fix the problem first.
If you're in California or another US state with a consumer privacy law: those laws apply only to businesses above certain revenue or data-volume thresholds, and we believe we're well below them, so they don't currently apply to us. We'll still honor the requests described above for everyone, wherever you live. We don't sell or share personal information, so there's nothing to opt out of. We treat browser privacy signals, such as Global Privacy Control, as a request not to sell or share, which we already don't do.
If you're in South Carolina: if a security breach affects personal identifying information we hold about you, we'll notify you as South Carolina law requires. (We don't collect the kinds of data that law mainly covers, such as Social Security, driver's license or financial account numbers.)
7. International transfers
We're based in the United States, and our service providers process data in the United States and other countries. If you're outside the US, your information will be transferred to the US, where privacy laws may differ from yours. Where the law requires, our providers use recognized safeguards for these transfers, such as the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
8. Children
The Site and Newsletter are meant for adult readers. They aren't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email [email protected] and we'll delete it.
9. Security
We use reasonable safeguards designed to protect personal information, rely on reputable service providers, and collect only what we need. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee security. If a breach affects your personal information, we'll notify you as the law requires.
10. Changes
If we change this notice, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change is significant, we'll tell subscribers by email before it takes effect.
