What to expect

Tone, structure, romance level and content notes for An Iris Stellick Thriller by B.M. Chandler.

The tone. Cold rooms, wet streets, river light. The dread is close and specific, and the procedure is real: rigor, lividity, the mug that's still wet in the drainer. The violence is never lingered on. What stays on the page is what's left behind.

A new case every book. Each book opens on a new death and closes its case by the last chapter. The walk never proves anything. Iris still has to build the case from evidence a jury could hold in its hands. Any book is a way in. Read them in order and the long game pays out.

The slow burn. Detective Theo Castellanos thinks Iris is too close to too many deaths. She thinks he's careful, relentless and wrong about everything that matters. Romance is slow-burn longing; the door stays closed. It builds one step a book, with no triangle and no shortcuts.

The long game. Somewhere in Tallow a single lamp is burning, and the man who lit it has been waiting twenty-two years. Up on the bluffs is the Tallow Exchange, a members' club founded in 1884, whose money has never been under water. Some of the city's oldest names have always known about people like Iris. Every book brings them closer.

The family. There's Mae, who runs the diner under the flood wall and won't talk about the past. There's Wes, Iris's brother, a deckhand who's done with being kept safe. And there's Gospel, her late mother's parrot, who still speaks in her mother's voice.

Closed-door romance: slow-burn tension, with no on-page sex. Contains suspense, murder, menace and non-graphic violence.
